The History and Setting of Castello dei Pio

Castello dei Pio is a historic palace formed from buildings constructed between the medieval period and the 18th century. It stands between Piazza dei Martiri and Piazzale Re Astolfo, at the heart of Carpi’s historic centre.

The complex took its present princely shape in the early 16th century, when Alberto III Pio brought its towers, fortresses and turrets together as his residence. The result is not a single building from one period, but an architectural ensemble shaped over centuries.

The palace’s central position makes the courtyard and museums natural stops while you’re exploring the surrounding squares. The Comune gives the address as Piazza dei Martiri, Carpi, MO, Italy, postal code 41012; the museum address is Piazza dei Martiri, 68, 41012 Carpi (MO).

What to See at the Castle

What to See at the Castle

The palace’s courtyard and two museums offer different ways to take in its architecture and Carpi’s past.

Start in the Cortile d’Onore, the palace’s formal reception space. Marble columns and stacked loggias frame the courtyard, where the layered design gives a sense of the scale of the complex. Access to the palace is free, while the museum visits are paid.

Inside the museum complex, the Museo del Palazzo route includes noble apartments, Renaissance art and woodcuts. One highlight is the Pio Chapel, where a fresco depicts Prince Alberto III Pio.

The Museo della Città takes a broader view of the area, presenting 35 centuries of Carpi history through objects, crafts and multimedia.

If you want to focus on the palace’s former residents and art, spend time with the Museo del Palazzo; for a wider account of local history, include the city museum. A separate museum visit in the area is covered by this guide to Museo della Bilancia.
